About This Conference

This lecture will explore the evolving landscape of liver transplantation with a focus on emerging medical innovations and their potential to improve access and outcomes. The talk will highlight advances in machine perfusion technology and how these developments may expand transplant eligibility, optimize organ utilization, and reshape traditional allocation strategies. Discussion will also address the growing importance of equity in transplantation, including the potential future role of artificial intelligence in organ allocation and decision-making. Additional future directions, including xenotransplantation and bioartificial liver support systems, will be briefly discussed as part of the broader vision for the field.

About the Speaker

Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Transplant

Dr. Neil D. Shah is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina and serves as Transplant Hepatology Program Director, Associate Medical Director of Liver Transplantation, and Program Director of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship. His clinical interests include transplant policy and allocation, with roles on the OPTN Liver and Intestine Committee and National Liver Review Board. He completed his undergraduate studies at North Carolina State University, earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completed residency training at the University of Virginia, and pursued fellowship training at both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt University.
